Yokai Podcast 17: “Talking Heads” (Shuten-dōji) – A Monster Guys Podcast Presentation
Show Notes & Summary:
The Monster Guys present: The Yokai Podcast!
Each week, we will bring you a story about a specific yokai, followed by a brief discussion, bringing you interesting insights, historical information, and short illustrative stories – sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious, often scary or disturbing, but always mystical – about the wonderful world of Yokai.
This week we share an original story by C. Michael McGannon titled “Talking Heads” about one of the three most terrible yokai in Japan – Shuten-dōji.
It’s lightly humorous, and largely a conversation between a severed head and the man charged to deliver it to its new resting place. After the story, we discuss Shuten-dōji’s story in the bigger picture of Japanese folklore. So, it’s kind of a double value this week! 🙂
As always it is our pleasure and privilege to share with you each week through the power and wonder of storytelling!
As much as we are granted permission, we will share the artwork of Matthew Meyer, yokai and Japanese culture author and illustrator, in reference to the yokai on the show. Matthew’s information is below. Please visit him and fall in love with the modern art and retelling of Japan’s mysterious yokai, through the eyes of someone who has devoted his career to researching and documenting them.
