The Monster Guys present: The Yokai Podcast!

Each week, we will bring you a story about a specific yokai, followed by a brief discussion about the monster and the category of yokai it belongs to. We’ll bring interesting insights, historical information, and short illustrative stories – sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious, often scary or disturbing, but always mystical – about the wonderful world of Yokai.

TanukiPoemCardIt’s been a few weeks since our last Yokai Podcast, and we return with an adaptation of the classic story “Kachi-kachi Yama” in this week’s story titled, “The Tanuki’s Stew”.

Often depicted as a mischievous prankster, fun-loving, or whimsical, this story turns the rare page to the tanuki’s “dark side” and shows a more sinister side of this yokai.

Join D.C. & C. Michael McGannon for a story about the tanuki, followed by a brief discussion about the creature, the variations of the original story, and the importance of this fanciful little creature in Japanese culture, both in times past, and today.

Art: The art is from a 19th century Japanese Poem Card, showing the tanuki with an umbrella and carrying a sake bottle.
